What is Collagen?
Collagen peptides are a white to yellow, odourless powder, that is neutral in taste are highly soluble in cold liquids.
Protein makes up 97 per cent of this natural product. On a dry basis, collagen peptides contain a total of 18 amino acids, including 8 of the 9 essential amino acids.
The amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline are the most prevalent in collagen peptides, making up 50 per cent of its total amino acid content.
What’s the difference between Gelatine and Collagen?
In contrast to gelatine, collagen has no gelling capabilities.
Amino acid chains in Gelatine are relatively long. Amino acid chains in collagen are much shorter. The latter enables a very high degree of biological availability.
What are the different types of collagens?
Collagen is the most abundant protein found in mammals. Twenty Eight different types of collagens are found in the human body, but only five types are commonly used in supplements. The five common types of collagens come in different forms and from varied sources. This results in different uses and potential benefits. These are:
- Type I. Found your skin, nails, bones, blood vessels, organs, tendons, and ligaments. This is the most common type
- Type II. Found in gut lining and elastic cartilage, which provides joint support.
- Type III. Found in structure of muscles, arteries, and organs.
- Type V. Found naturally in the eye, helping light pass through the cornea, and in the placenta of expectant mothers
- Type X. Found in Joints and bones
How to use Collagen
Studies have shown that 10 grams of collagen powder per day are sufficient for adults to enjoy the benefits to joint, bone and skin health.
Collagen is readily soluble in water, and as a result you can mix it with beverages such as juice or other liquids, or in foods such as yoghurt, porridge, or cereals.
For best results in beverages, put a little powder into a glass. Then mix it into a paste with a little of the liquid. Make sure you mix it very well, then add a little more liquid, mix well. Then add the rest of the liquid.
