What is the link between Gelatine and Picasso?
The link is in the framing!
A custom-made framing company, John Davies Framing uses Gelatine as part of the traditional process of preparing gold picture frames to be used for original paintings by artists such as Picasso, Monet, Magritte and many, many more.
John Davies framing was established over 50 years ago by John Davies himself, and now the business is in the care of the next generation of his family, continuing to create the beautiful frames that enhance the artwork itself.
Gelatine is used by the company as part of the traditional water gilding process. In this process, gold leaf is applied to the surface of the frame using a brushed on wet gelatine “size” which sticks it to the surface. The gold leaf can later be toned and distressed.

These beautiful frames are custom made for art dealers and auction houses, and can be seen enhancing artwork in museums and galleries around the world.
You can see some of their work, and that of the artists they frame, on their instagram account
